Twins win Game 162, but the Title is still up for grabs

The Twins avoided an embarrassing and crushing sweep and ended their season with a win… or is the end of the season?  We will have to wait and see what happens with the ChiSox playing their makeup game with the Tigers on Monday.  If the Tigers win, the Twins get the division.  If the White Sox win, the Twins have to play them, in Chicago, to determine the AL Central winner.

Scott Baker pitched 7 shutout innings and came up clutch when the Twins needed a pitcher to do so.  Mauer went 2-4 and raised his batting average to .330, or rather kept it there, and still holds a marginal lead over Dustin Pedroia as of 4:33 Central Time.  The Red Sox have another game to play in a doubleheader against the Yankees, so there is an outside chance he can still win the Batting Title.  Let’s hope Mauer can win his second one.

Things are getting interesting at the end of the season.  I would hope the Tigers come out and play and win against the White Sox, but I have learned not to count on the Tigers, especially this year.  So, the Twins have to gear up and get ready to play.  That being said, Nick Blackburn has been tapped to fill in for Kevin Slowey, who is still nursing along his wrist that was struck with a line drive.  The X-rays were negative, but there was still noticeable swelling Sunday, so we will just have to wait and see if Kevin can be healthy for the post season.

I am getting really exciting anticipating playing the Tampa Rays.  The Rays were baseball’s Cinderella story this year, but in many ways the Twins were also.  Nobody expected the Twins to be competing for the AL Central title — in fact, people had them pegged to be challenging the Royals for the bottom of the division.

I would love to see the Twins go against the Rays, mainly because of the trade the two teams made in the offseason that have helped them both out (Rays more than the Twins).  The Twins traded Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett, and Eduardo Morlan to the Rays for Delmon Young, Jason Pridie, and Brendan Harris.  Harris and Young have been good for the Twins, but Matt Garza has really solidified the Rays’ rotation, and Barlett has secured the defense up the middle for the Rays, and was even their Team MVP.  So I would love to see all the players wanting to do well against their former teams.

There’s my two cents
